Metta

Hong Kong, China SAR 2016

Metta is a hub for Hong Kong’s entrepreneurial minds to gather, mingle and spark new innovative ideas. Located in the heart of the city overlooking its signature skyline, the space comprises of an open area with a brew bar run by a local trendy cafe.

Metta was established as a new dynamic digital platform to link entrepreneurs and start-ups. It is a constantly changing progressive concept and to translate the idea into a tangible space, the design needed to transform, evolve and provide room for growth and future elements.

A series of mobile shelving running along I-beam ceiling tracks was designed to adapt and facilitate different events. The bookshelves shift and dissect the open area to create an ever-changing interior to accommodate for events from cocktail parties, dinner gatherings, lectures, to meeting rooms for smaller functions. A stage on wheels can be moved around to provide extra versatility during talks and start-up pitches.

Sustainability was an important factor and the design optimizes daylighting by maximizing usage of the large windows. We also specified readily available materials and products that have a longer and lower life cycle cost wherever possible. Nanoleaf, a new and unique Hong Kong based lighting company that produce highly energy efficient LED bulbs was incorporated as a lighting feature in the space.

Through a bright yellow portal, the entrance accentuates the high ceiling and enhances the experience of the members as they enter the world of Metta. Amidst the eclectic mix of furniture, the design aims to be a comfortable workspace defined as somewhere between an office and a home. A mid-height datum line on the wall, made of a bronze trim detail, runs around the perimeter symbolizing Metta as a medium that connects the creative and innovative minds of Hong Kong.
